Skepta dropped one of the most hotly awaited albums of the year over a week ago now. “Konnichiwa” dropped and the world went crazy, with every man and his dog posting reviews of the album. I did a first listen album review live on air on Itch Fm last weekend. Its an epic album and it ticks all the boxes for what will be seen as a pivotal album, which will inspire generations to come. It reached number two in the official UK album chart, being held of the top spot by Radiohead and hitting the top 20 in the album charts of over 30 different countries.
Now we are not going to talk about the album in depth as to be fair everyone has already done that, myself included. Its a great album though, 4 years in the making and covering all the styles you would expect of an artist of Skepta’s calibre if you haven’t got it yet, make sure you get it.
Semtex sits down for a no holds barred interview with Skepta, which went smoother than i expected as Skepta mentioned in a recent interview that he had minimal love for the 1Xtra family. That said though this is arguably the rawest most heartfelt interview you will ever see, with an artist of this calibre. Semtex takes it back to the beginning with Skepta covering his childhood growing up, juggling the road life, making the transition from road man to DJ, to MC. A man who knew from very early what he wanted to do with his life. Everything is covered here, from the early days in Grime, Clashes, Haters, Drake to becoming a global superstar and touring the world. The energy Skepta brings here is second to none and you really feel like what we are seeing music wise in the UK in 2016 is nothing compared to what will be coming.
I can honestly say that there is so much in this 50 minute interview, that i feel like you may need to watch it 2 or 3 times just to get all the elements. Semtex really did an amazing job here and i think he caught Skepta at the right time, as there were no passes, pauses or holds bared. This is arguably going to be the interview to reference for many years to come.
